Higham ceramic tile by Donald Maxwell [Ack. John Mason)

A fine example of a Maxwell tile showing St Marys Church and the old Sun Inn.  But do you know of any more tiles?   If so, read the message at the bottom of this page.

The Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society has asked our History Group if anyone knows of the location of similar tiles.  They were produced around 1932 by Donald Maxwell who was a Kent historian and illustrator.

The tiles were part of the Domesday Tiles produced to show how towns and villages in Kent looked in the 1920's and 30's.  They were made by Doultons of Lambeth and were intended to be mainly sold to churches, schools, libraries, pubs or village halls.

We know that Higham was one of the many villages so depicted.  But -- and here is the problem -- did any tiles survive locally?  We would be very interested to hear from anyone who knows the wherabouts of any other tiles featuring scenes of Higham.

Can you help HVHG and the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society trace the current whereabouts of any of these tiles.  Please let any HVHG member know (email us here) or contact the Tiles and Architectural Ceramics Society direct on 0208 852 8236.
