Taking Dickens to America at Christmas by Martin Harris
Report
of meeting held |
|
San Francisco hosts a Dickensian and Victorian Fair of huge (American) proportions each holiday season. Actors and volunteers come together with costumed customers to create a magical extravaganza. More English than anything found here, there are performances of Dickens’ stories, Gilbert & Sullivan’s The Pirates of Penzance, street theatre, dancing at Fezziwig’s, and even genuine English Fish and Chips. Martin performs there each year and treated us to excerpts from A Christmas Carol where he plays Ebenezer Scrooge.
Dickens wanted his readers to see Scrooge as the dark side of us all, and later the delights of redemption and the belief that the best things in life are those that you give away.
You can see details of the fair at www.dickensfair.com.
